I will come offer my prayers on the eve of the sixth day and pick out from your garden the most appropriate jewel to offer to the heavens.

Shinichi had to admit that he was looking forward to this heist. It was the first time in three years that he would be able to attend a heist in his own body. Though the heist notice had been as misleading as usual, one only had to look at the calendar to realize that Greenery Day was coming up and that the Chalk Emerald was the intended target.
The thrill of the chase tonight felt as sweet as it had been on the night of their first meeting, up on that clock tower. As Conan, he had constantly chased after that same emotion, that sense of normality. He had treasured every one of those moments that had permitted him to feel more like himself in a time where everything else reminded him of the web of lies that he had wrapped himself around.
Now, he was on the roof again, breathing hard through the healthy lungs of an adult body. He’d raced up to where he knew he would find the elusive phantom thief in strides much quicker than he’d been able to take in years. He was at the top of his game tonight. He had a good feeling about it.
Just then, the door of the roof was pushed open. One of Inspector Nakamori’s officers slipped in quietly and then stopped upon spotting him. Rather than being taken off guard, the officer grinned. Behind the police helm, a pair of amethyst eyes seemed to glow with an excitement that matched his own.
“You made it.”
Shinichi smirked at the words.
“You don’t seem very surprised.”
The phantom thief laughed slightly.
“Of course not. I knew you would be here today. I counted on it. After all, tonight…” There was a slight pause as the officer was shrouded in smoke. When it cleared, Kaitou KID, in his usual white suit, stood in his place, his cape billowing behind him. The thief bowed slightly at the waist, though his eyes remained on Shinichi the entire time. “You are my guest of honor,” he said, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Shinichi’s eyebrows rose slightly. His smirk softened as he met the thief’s eyes.
“Oh? I can’t say I’m not flattered, but what makes you say so? There’s plenty of detectives after you, KID. Tonight is no different than the rest.”
“Hmm, that’s not quite true.”
KID rose from his bow and with that cocky glint in his eye, he took a step forward, and then another. Shinichi watched in surprise and curiosity as the thief crossed the distance between them, seemingly fearless, even as Shinichi’s hand twitched in the direction of his own waist, towards the dials of his belt.
But, in a movement too quick for the eye to follow, KID breached the distance that remained. Shinichi stilled and almost flinched back as those gloved fingers reached out to take his hand. He looked at the thief sharply, startled and even more curious than before of what the other was planning.
The words lingered on the tip of his tongue, but KID, ever the thief, stole his breath before he could utter them.
“I had thought you had figured that out already,” KID said lightly as he cradled Shinichi’s fingers and held his gaze. “None of them are quite as special to me as you.”
Shinichi’s heart skipped. His eyes widened and heat spread across his face until his cheeks burned hot. KID’s proximity, the candor in his voice, the sensation of those soft gloves pressing into his skin — all of it short-circuited his brain and halted his thoughts briefly.
“I-Idiot,” he snapped hotly. “Don’t mistake me for one of your fangirls. Did you really think that I was gonna fall for a cheesy line like that?” He tried to pull away his hand but KID held on tight and proceeded to bend down in one knee. Shinichi stilled again, cursing the thief and cursing his own damned curiosity. He swallowed hard and felt his skin tingle as KID, as bold as ever, lowered his head to press a kiss against the knuckles of his hand.
“You wound me,” KID murmured, his voice carrying through the soft breeze that enveloped them. “And here I thought you felt the same way,” he accused with a devilish, playful smirk.
I do, Shinichi thought, the only words that were startling clear in the chaotic mix of emotions he felt at that moment. But he, in no way, would admit to the thief that that was the truth.
It didn’t seem like he had to though. KID smirked widely as if he could read his very mind, the most intrusive trick a magician could ever threaten to perform.
“By the way, oh Great Detective, were you able to figure out the real reason behind this heist?”
“Huh?”
KID chuckled and smoothly rose to his feet. Shinichi’s eyes were immediately drawn to the card that suddenly appeared between the other’s fingers. “I guess you didn’t. I had a feeling that might be the case. Despite having such a sharp mind, when it comes to this, you really are forgetful, aren’t you?”
Shinichi scowled. What had he missed? He tried to decipher the meaning behind the other’s words. “What the hell are you talking about?”
“Ah, ah, ah!” The card disappeared as KID brought a finger to rest in front of his own mouth. He gave Shinichi a mock-stern look before wagging his finger slightly. “Not yet, wait for it…”
A silent count down began to take place. KID mimed it with his fingers, one, two, three…
POP.
There was another eruption of smoke, this one bigger than the first, and when it dispersed, KID was nowhere to be seen. In his place, just a few feet above where he had stood, there was a large banner held up by a pair of doves. And on the floor, spread across his every inch of the rooftop, were enough flowers that if any bystander were to gaze upon the scene, they would claim to have stumbled into a secret garden.
“Happy Birthday, Meitantei & Welcome Back,” the banner said. In the far, far distance, a bell began to chime the count to midnight. Shinichi gaped incredulously at the outlandish display. For a long moment there, he felt inclined to think that this was all just a dream. But there was only one person in this world that would be audacious enough to pull a trick like this, and Shinichi could not deny the evidence the thief had left behind—the Chalk Emerald sitting on Shinichi’s ring finger.
